A massive explosion in Kobani.

Smoke fills the skies amid the battle for control of the Syrian border town that is taking center stage in the fight against Islamic State.

Weeks of air strikes and the deaths of hundreds of militant fighters have failed to break the siege.

Now Iraqi peshmerga fighters are preparing to head into the battle.

The siege of Kobani has become a test of the U.S.-led coalition's ability to stop Islamic State's advance. And, Washington is welcoming the deployment, intensifying its air strikes ahead of their arrival.
