New York police officer critically wounded in hatchet attack

Surveillance video shows the 32-year-old assailant running with a metal hatchet moments before he attacked four rookie New York City police officers.

The officers were on foot patrol in Queens Thursday afternoon when they were asked by a freelance photographer to pose for a picture.

That's when the hatchet-wielding assailant attacked, injuring two officers, one critically, before the man was shot dead.

SOUNDBITE: NEW YORK CITY POLICE COMMISSIONER BILL BRATTON, SAYING:

"As he continued his assault, the remaining two officers then fired multiple times on the armed suspect who fell to the ground, dropping the hatchet, the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene."

Both injured officers were rushed to Jamaica Hospital.

The 25-year-old officer who was hit in the head is in critical condition.

The other officer, 24 years old is in stable condition.
