VIDEO TACKLES PREJUDICE TOWARDS WEST AFRICANS AS EBOLA SPREADS
Faced with growing stigmatization born out of fear of the Ebola virus Liberian journalist Shoana Clarke Solomon created a video to tackle the prejudice towards West Africans. She explains that although the deadly disease is devastating Liberia, Guinea, Sierra Leone and Nigeria, not everyone has become infected with the virus. She concludes the clip with the lines “I am a Liberian, not a virus!”
And as we can see in these shots doing the rounds on social networks, she has inspired countless web users across the continent. Often they are holding a sign bearing the slogan, reminding others that just because they are African, it does not mean that they have contracted Ebola.
And the strong online campaigning comes as a growing number of countries and institutions across the globe are taking precautionary measures that target African nationals specifically. At the beginning of the month, Texas University Navarro College for example, started rejecting any applicants from countries with confirmed Ebola cases. Their policy has been met with widespread condemnation online, with many questioning how the move actually helps stop the spread of the disease.
