Rain might have dampened the "Whiplash" premiere, but Oscar buzz surrounding the film is still building.

The movie centers on the relationship between a young drummer played by Miles Teller and his instructor played by J. K. Simmons.

The story is loosely based on writer-director Damien Chazelle's real life experience.

"I was a drummer with a very tough teacher and so when I was writing the script it was kind of very much a personal thing, translating experiences I'd had onto the page to a large degree, not entirely again, but that was the inspiration."

Teller plays drums throughout the movie but when he was cast, the director was unaware of his existing talent.
