"I have been honored"- Malala on winning Nobel Peace Prize

Seventeen year old Malala Yousafzai becomes the youngest ever Nobel Peace Laureate.

In 2012 she was attacked in Pakistan's Swat Valley as a punishment for a blog that she wrote as an 11-year-old to campaign against the Taliban's efforts to deny women an education.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) NOBEL PEACE LAUREATE MALALA YOUSAFZAI , SAYING:

"I am feeling honored that I am being chosen as a Nobel laureate and I have been honored with this precious award the Nobel peace prize."

In Pakistan she is now celebrated.

(SOUNDBITE) (Urdu) RESIDENT OF KARACHI, ABDUL MUJEEB, SAYING:

"I would say it is a good thing for Muslims. This is a great honor for Muslim countries and Muslim nations. Nothing could be better than this."

It's a sentiment being echoed in neighboring Afghanistan, where the Taliban still wields influence over the lives of women and girls.
