Sandwich Consumption Levels Trigger USDA Concerns About Sodium Intake

The people at the USDA took a closer look at questionnaire information they’d gathered and found that nearly half of all Americans eat at least 1 sandwich a day.

The agency also announced that nationwide the meal option accounts for 20 percent of the daily sodium intake, not 4 percent as was previously estimated.

No, sandwiches have not become significantly saltier in recent years.

The difference came down to the agency switching up how they handled the survey’s coding system.

In past years when participants listed the ingredients separately each component was assigned to its individual category.

Sandwiches were only tallied when they were specifically listed as such.

Recently, the USDA enlisted a new approach and began acknowledging itemized entries like ham, cheese, mayonnaise and bread for what they really are - sandwiches.

As a result, the category has grown by 30 percent, and the amount of sodium attributed to it was adjusted accordingly.

The USDA now says that for individuals on restricted diets a sandwich can amount to about half of their total daily sodium allowance.

It’s recommended that consumers keep that fact in mind when deciding what to stack between two slices of bread.
