Astronauts take first walk outside International Space Station

Astronauts Reid Wiseman of NASA and Alexander Gerst of the European Space Agency were expected to work outside the International Space Station on Tuesday for more than six hours.

The spacewalk officially began at 8:30 a.m. EDT.

According to NASA, the spacewalkers will relocate a failed pump module and install gear that provides back up power to external robotics equipment.

Both Wiseman and Gerst are conducting their first ever spacewalks. The pair were selected as astronauts in 2009. They have been aboard the station since May, having launched together on Soyuz TMA-13M/39S.
