The Vessel-ID System investigation on ISS tracks the Automatic Identification System (AIS) signal that is emitted from sea-faring ships on Earth. It relays ship position reports to tracking stations on the ground. In 2012, a fishing vessel overturned in the Norwegian Sea, and the sole survivor was found with the help of this tracking system.
