Latvia's PM Straujuma set for re-election

Latvia’s incumbent prime minister has cast her vote in the country’s general election, a ballot opinion polls suggest she is likely to win.

The centre-right government of Laimdota Straujuma has highlighted its hard line against Russia, its neighbour and former ruler.

As she voted she said the election was “different because of what is  going on in Ukraine.”

The main Concord pro-Russian opposition has been polling about five percentage points behind the coalition government.

Russians make up more than a fifth of voters in Latvia.

Election campaigning shifted from concerns about the economy to security.

The pro-Russian opposition did not support a parliamentary resolution that supported Ukraine against what the text called “Russian aggression.”
