Syria condemns Turkey's 'act of aggression' after approval of raids against ISIL fighters

Syria has condemned Turkey’s decision to approve cross-border raids against the Islamic State militant group as an ‘act of aggression’.
The foreign ministry added that Turkey would not be safe from ‘catastrophic consequences’.
The news came as Islamic State fighters encircled the Syrian city of Kobani near the Turkish border. Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu vowed Turkey would do everything in its power to prevent the area from falling to insurgents.
“We wouldn’t want Kobani to fall. We welcomed our brothers who came from Kobani. We’ll do whatever we can to prevent this from happening. Turkey is the protector of Syrian Kurds, just like as it is of Turkmen and Arabs,” Davutoglu said.
The Defence Minister told reporters that military action was not imminent. Ankara is wary of being dragged into a wider conflict and of aiding Kurdish fighters linked to the PKK party, which has been waging a three-decade long insurgency against the Turkish state.
Canada has said it will now join airstrikes against IS group targets but has not committed ground troops.
