At least eight people are injured and 250 others are stranded as Mount Ontake volcano erupts in Japan Saturday.

Thick grey clouds of ash were billowing into the air along with small rocks, witnesses said.

Rescue efforts are underway to retrieve those still stranded.

Officials said airplanes have been diverted to avoid the ash clouds.

The volcano is located about 125 miles west of Tokyo.
