Torrential rains triggered by Typhoon Fung-wong caused massive floods and destroyed houses in Taiwan's eastern coastal county of Taitung, local media reported on Monday (September 22).

Fung-wong arrived in Taiwan on Sunday (September 21), bringing gale-force winds and torrential rain to parts of the island.

In Taitung county, the rain raised river levels and damaged at least one house, local media FTV reported.

As of 9 a.m. (0100 GMT) on Monday, Fung-wong had left one dead and injured four more, and forced more than 4,000 people from their homes, Taiwan's Central Emergency Operation Centre said.

Fung-wong, a Chinese word for phoenix, caused severe disruption in the Philippines when it passed through on Friday (September 19) and Saturday (September, 20). Heavy rain in parts of the country, including the capital, Manila, killed at least five people and displaced about 200, 000.
