Professional Photographer & Adobe Certified Lightroom & Photoshop Expert Geoff Cable of the GC2 Photo Club demonstrates the use of Adjustment Layers in Photoshop enabling you to get the best out of your images.

Adjustment layers are key to getting the final image you want without messing up or destroying the original image.

There are a number of different adjustment layers available within Photoshop, including exposure, black and white, saturation
curves etc.

Follow the tutorial and give all the available adjustment layers in Photoshop with some of your own images and see what effects you can create. Be adventurous and use extreme and mild adjustments on the adjustment layers and use the opacity of each adjustment layer to set its strength.

Each adjustment layer comes with a layer mask. You can 'paint' onto an adjustment layer mask with black or white (or variants of grey) to either erase (black) or partially erase (grey variants) the adjustment layer mask where you paint. If you overdo it, you can paint it back in by using white to paint onto the adjustment layer mask.

It is essential to minimize post-shoot editing time, especially if you're a professional trying to make a profit. The less time you spend in your digital darkroom the more time you can spend on other money-making tasks.

It's amazing how many photographers we've met that only know the basic tools, processes and add-ons available for Adobe Lightroom. If you only know a small part of the software package you're using then you are not utilizing your investment to its maximum potential.

Here at GC2 Photo Club we like to introduce you to the little tips, tricks and workarounds that help you make the most from your Lightroom and Photoshop software, giving you the tools to make informed decisions regarding your post-shoot workflow.

Any tip or trick that introduces time-saving techniques without compromising quality is a great thing for the professional photographer and the hobby photographer alike.
