UN envoy arrives in Damascus on peace mission as war rages

Amateur video which cannot be independently verified by Reuters appears to show rebel forces striking a government helicopter.

This, in a country after more than three years of war, where rubble-lined streets have become part of the nation's fabric.

Meanwhile, Syrian TV reports that government forces launched air strikes and ground attacks on several targets held by the al-Qaeda affiliated, Nusra Front on the Syrian side of the Golan Heights.

It's a war that has already claimed the lives of more than 190,000 people.

And against this backdrop, UN Special Envoy Staffan Mistura arrives for his first visit to Damascus, seeking a peaceful resolution to the Syrian conflict.

He is expected to request a permanent residence in Damascus, unlike his predecessors who stayed outside the country.

He is also due to meet Syrian President Bashar al-Assad as well as figures from the domestic opposition.
