New York Fashion Week got off to an agitated start as animal rights activists targeted models from the Victor de Souza collection in Manhattan.
The Argentinian designer had chosen the Big Apple’s traditional horse-drawn carriages to present his extravagant new outfits.
Some of the models responded by holding up their own signs expressing support for the 150-year old tradition.
The horse-drawn carriages operating in and around Central Park have become a hotly debated issue in recent months after the city’s new mayor Bill De Blasio said the use of the animals was inhumane.
Meanwhile, backstage, final preparations were underway on opening day.
Among those showing off their new collections was Japanese-born American designer Tadashi Shoji, known for his versatility and his A-list celebrity clients including the likes of Michele Obama.
His romantic new spring collection was filled with lace and embroidered dresses inspired by the facades of the Golden Palace in Venice.
The color palette, too, was reminiscent of a sunset on the Grand Canal, featuring a dreamy medley of soft pinks, jade, blue and shimmery gold.
Lace was prominent throughout the collection, from short cocktail dresses to tops paired with floor-length skirts, belted trench coats and gowns with matching capes.
