Truck bombs tear through Ghazni as Afghan political wrangling continues

Afghanistan should have been the NATO summit’s high point, with the alliance handing over security to the authorities in Kabul.

Instead the latest elections are disputed and no-one is in power. The county itself seems powerless to prevent terror attacks like the two truck bombs that went off in Ghazni south of the capital Kabul on Thursday. The blasts badly damaged the National Security Directorate building, and a police barracks.

At least 18 people are reported dead and 150 injured. The provincial governor says 19 Taliban fighters were involved, and following the explosions they engaged in a gunbattle with security forces.

The authorities claimed all the attackers were killed, and confirmed eight soldiers had died in their sleep when their dormitory was caught in the blasts.
