United States President Barack Obama has condemned the beheading of Steven Sotloff at the hands of Islamic State militants at a news conference in Tallinn on Wednesday (September 3).

Speaking alongside Estonian President Toomas Hendrink Ilves at a meeting with Baltic states in the Estonian capital, Obama said that the killing only strengthened U.S. resolve to take the fight to the Islamic militants.

"I want to say that today the prayers of the American people are with the family of a devoted and courageous journalist Steven Sotloff," he said.

"Whatever these murderers think they will achieve by killing innocent Americans like Steven, they have already failed. They have failed because, like people around the world, Americans are repulsed by their barbarism. We will not be intimidated - their horrific acts only unite us as a country and stiffen our resolve to take the fight again
