Parents of seriously ill 5-year-old boy freed by Spanish judge

The parents of five-year-old Ashya King have left a Madrid prison after a Spanish judge ordered their immediate release.

The couple were separated from their son following a two-day Europe-wide search after they removed him from a British hospital against medical advice.

“I have to go and see my son,” said the boy’s father after being released. “So thank you Spain for helping us, thank you to England for helping us and we’ve only got positive things to say about everything.”

Ashya suffers from a brain tumour. His parents want him to receive pioneering treatment abroad not available from Britain’s health service.

The high-profile case of the parents’ arrest and separation from their son prompted British Prime Minister, David Cameron, to call for “an outbreak of common sense” amid widespread condemnation in the country’s media of the British police’s pursuit of the couple.
