Massive fire rips through Chile shopping center

A massive fire lit up the Santiago sky Thursday night.

Dozens of firefighters responded to the Sodimac Homecenter store, where flames leapt into the sky.

Local residents say the fire engulfed the store in just minutes.

(SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) UNIDENTIFIED AREA RESIDENT, SAYING:

"You could hear explosions then two minutes later it was like that. Everything burned in two minutes."

The blaze in the Nunoa neighborhood destroyed the store and damaged a neighboring supermarket.

Firefighters say they struggled to contain it.

(SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) UNIDENTIFIED FIREFIGHTER, SAYING:

"It was a very large fire. The main problem we have right now is the water supply. The hydrants in this area have very low pressure."

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and while there were no reports of death or injury, the damage bill is likely to be substantial.
