Manufacture Piaget 1290P Movement

Designed around the 1200P movement - the world's thinnest automatic movement - the 1290P automatic minute repeater movement measures a mere 4.8 mm thick, a record for thinness in its class.

Operating the sliding bolt at 9 o'clock triggers the minute repeater function that indicates the time by sounds, generated by the vibrations of a gong struck by hammers. These were developed in steel for an optimum trade-off between stability and weight.

The gong has been designed in one piece to allow better transmission of vibrations - and therefore sound - through the cushion-shaped movement and case. The case was hollowed out to a maximum to provide the best possible resonance. The movement is equipped with a flywheel to ensure a regular chiming rate from start to finish.

Whereas a conversation reaches on average 65 decibels, the 1290P automatic minute repeater movement offers an impressive sound intensity of not less than 64 decibels of incredible purity. Sounding in the fifth octave, the hours are chimed in G-sharp, while the minutes are counted in A-sharp.

Not content with simply designing the chime to be both intense and regular, the Piaget watchmaking Manufacture has also worked on the timbre and managed to create a rich sound with three almost harmonic partials.

This movement inaugurates the most prestigious level of finishing ever made by Piaget: what it calls "finitions image" ("image finish"). Embodying the motto "Toujours faire mieux que nécessaire" ("Always do better than necessary"), these decorations are entirely crafted by hand using a file on all the movement's components.

The movement features decorations demanding the most advanced know-how of the only the best craftsmen: beveled bridges, finely hand-drawn, sunburst or circular satin-brushed wheels, rose gold oscillating weight and screws, and a polished mirror finish.
