After weeks of heavy rain, the saturated hillside gave way just before dawn, sending a torrent of mud and water into the neighborhood below.

Residents were caught by surprise.

More than 35 people - including many children - were killed. Many others are still missing. Rescue workers are going house to house looking for surviviors.

Some residents are trapped in their homes by a sea of mud.

The force of the landslide destroyed roads and vehicles. Houses are in ruins.

And with yet more rain expected, residents in adjoining suburbs have been advised to evacuate. Officials say there may be worse to come.
