They came in droves despite the rain to remember the dead.

A vigil for the 617 people who were killed in last week's earthquake in south western China.

The 6.3 magnitude quake hit Ludian County a week earlier at a time when many people were at home.

Thousands of buildings were razed and nearly two thousand people injured.

In the drizzle, around one thousand people gathered in Yunnan Province lighting candles to commemorate the victims.

"I think that people came to participate in this event so that they can let us remember this earthquake. So many people came to pray for those hit in the disaster zone, for those people who died, so that they may rest in peace."

Yunan province is one of China's most quake-prone regions.

The latest earthquake created a huge lake that's threatening to flood the remote mountainous area and thousands of people have been moved to safety.
