Fighting in eastern Ukraine reached the separatist stronghold of Donetsk as pro-Russian fighters and government troops exchanged rocket fire in neighbourhoods on the edge of the city.

The body of an elderly woman carried out of her bungalow after rockets landed in her courtyard. Apparently fired from a Ukrainian government position.

Residents inside Donetsk said Ukrainian warplanes has carried out airstrikes overnight.

“Oh it is very scary, especially these last three nights,” said Lynbov Sas, who manages a local bakery. “My daughters are scared, they are afraid for their life, obviously. We also fear that after shelling, power cuts will prevent the bakery from working.”

Pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine have been battling the Kyiv government since April.

Fighting across eastern Ukraine has forced more than 285,000 people to flee their homes, according to figures from the United Nations.

Pro-Russian separatists control Donetsk and Luhansk. Kyiv troops surround the rebel-held areas, and warn of an increase in Russian troops massed along the border.

That has sparked renewed fears of intervention by Moscow.

Russia denies beefing up its military presence.
