Japan marks Hiroshima anniversary

Japan has marked the 69th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima with a ceremony in the city’s Peace Park.

About 45,000 people, including survivors, residents and visitors from around the world, observed a minute’s silence at the moment of detonation near the epicentre of the 1945 attack that killed up to 140,000 people.

In an address Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said that as the sole country to face a nuclear attack, Japan has a duty to seek to eliminate nuclear weapons.
