Never Smoked A Cigar? We Got You Covered With These Basics

There's always a great occasion to smoke a cigar. Whether you're relaxing after an amazing meal, or just enjoying a campfire, having a cigar in hand is a serious treat. Here's the thing though, most people don't know how to properly prepare and smoke a stogie, AskMen has got you covered.

You'll need:

A cigar (obviously)
A cigar cutter
A flame
A piece of cedar
Some time to enjoy your cigar

First off, choose the right cigar. Do you want a quick fix, or something you can enjoy for a couple hours? Every cigar has it's own distinct taste, so ask your local aficionado (or cigar shop keeper) if he has any recommendations.

Once you've made your choice, it's time to cut. Make sure to cut within the curve of the tip. Cutting too far down can compromise the cigar wrapper which in turn can cause the cigar to unwrap itself, so make sure to cut in the curve.

Lighting this bad boy up isn't very difficult, light the cedar on fire and use it to light the cigar. Match heads and gas lighters can slightly alter the taste of the cigar, by using a third party like the cedar, you guarantee the best possible flavor.

Now it's time to enjoy your cigar, the lesson isn't finished yet though. Most people already know not to inhale the cigar smoke, but what's equally important, is to not over-smoke the cigar. An average sized cigar should only be puffed on once every minute or so. More times than that and you risk overheating the inside of the cigar, and completely killing the taste. Take your time with it, it's the best way to enjoy.

Now go celebrate something with a nice cigar.
