With Argentina meeting Germany in the World Cup final, thousands packed into St Peter's Square on Sunday, many waving the two countries' flags.
Some speculated that Argentine Pope Francis would send best wishes to his national team.
Instead, the Pope made no mention of the match, striking a decidedly neutral tone.

"Don't forget to pray for me! I wish everyone a good Sunday and a good lunch! Goodbye!"
The Vatican also brushed aside talk of soccer rivalry between Argentine Pope Francis and his predecessor Benedict, a German.
Benedict, who lives his retirement in seclusion, is reportedly not a soccer fan.
While Francis was a keen supporter of the San Lorenzo soccer club in Buenos Aires.
Even as fans arrive at Rio de Janeiro's Maracana stadium for the match, the Vatican says no decision had been taken on how the two popes would spend the night.
