Another case of a suspected U.S. spy in Germany has come to light.

As a result, a government spokesman says Germany has asked a U.S. intelligence official at the embassy in Berlin to leave the country.

And Angela Merkel voiced her strongest comments yet:

(SOUNDBITE) (German) GERMAN CHANCELLOR, ANGELA MERKEL, SAYING:

"The Federal Prosecutor General is still looking into this case. But if what we hear right now is true, I have to say that from my point of view, spying on allies is a waste of energy in the end. We have so many problems, and I think we should focus on the important things. Just look at the challenges posed in Syria regarding ISIS. If you look at the fight against terrorism, there are huge problems. That is of the highest priority from my point of view, and not spying among allies."

German members of parliament are demanding a full investigation.

They say friends must not be treated like enemies.
