An Italian photographer has wrapped up a Europe-wide tour of his work with an exhibition in Brussels.
The European Dream Road bus mirrored the journey taken by many refugees and immigrants across the continent.
Photographer Alessandro Penso said he wanted to tell the stories of the many thousands of foreigners who flock to Europe’s shores each year.
Penso followed the would-be migrants, who mostly hail from Afghanistan, Syria and North Africa, to see first-hand how they were welcomed inside the EU.
Once he had finished his project, he decided to take his work on the road, all the way to Brussels.
Illegal migration to the EU rose by nearly half last year, compared to 2012, with 107,000 registered by the EU’s border authorities, up from 72,500 the previous year.
A quarter of 2013’s number were Syrians; the largest nationality group.
