São Paulo, Jul 2 (EFE).- Angel Di Maria's goal late in the second overtime period gave Argentina a 1-0 victory over Switzerland Tuesday and vaulted the Latin American squad into the World Cup quarterfinals.
The Argentines, displaying the inconsistency that has plagued them throughout the tournament, came up against a quality Swiss side led by young Kosovo-born striker Xherdan Shaqiri.
Most of the fans at São Paulo's Arena Corinthians were in Argentina's corner, though the Brazilians in the crowd cheered every reverse suffered by their hated regional rival.
The Argentine supporters were waiting for another miracle from superstriker Lionel Messi, who deserves most of the credit for the team's success so far.
But Switzerland coach Ottmar Hitzfeld had other ideas and Messi found himself being marked by as many as four opposing players nearly every time he touched the ball in the offensive zone.
Shaqiri, the diminutive striker touted by some as the Swiss Messi, exp
