It's the 100th anniversary marking the murder of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, presumptive heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne.

It wasn an assassination that triggered the start of World War One, where more than 10 million soldiers died, and empires collapsed.

He was killed on the morning of June 28, 1914 in Sarajevo by 19-year-old Bosnian Serb Gavrilo Princip.

A group of teachers visiting Sarajevo said they wanted to live the historic moment.

"We're here because we are teachers from the United States and we wanted to come here to experience the 100 year anniversary of the beginning of the First World War. So, we thought it would be a unique place to be and to see the sites where it happened, where so much happened during the 20th century."
