Over seventy police personnel were injured when infuriated workers of Pakistan Awami Tehreek pelted stones at policemen near airport in Islamabad on Monday.

On the orders of the interior ministry, the police showed restraint and did not resort to the use of force against the protesters.
Injured police personnel have been shifted to PIMs, Polyclinic and District Headquarters Hospital Rawalpindi.

Meanwhile, the Punjab government has announced a compensation of Rs 300,000 for the injured police personnel.

Punjab Law Minister Rana Mashood has said that workers of Pakistan Awami Tehreek have not been arrested anywhere in Punjab.

He said the government respects people’s right to peaceful protest.

Qadri's supporters, including a large number of women, managed to breach police cordons to arrive at the Islamabad airport overnight, chanting "Long live Tahir-ul-Qadri" and "revolution, revolution, Islamic revolution".

Surveillance helicopters flew overhead as police fired teargas at the crowd occupying the area outside the airport, an AFP reporter at the scene said.

Television footage showed Qadri's followers armed with sticks and bricks clashing with baton-wielding police.
