Floodgates open in flood-stricken Argentina

Floodgates opened at a hydroelectric dam to help relieve surging water levels along the Parana river.

In flood-stricken northern Argentina, communities are on high alert... as meteorologist predict more heavy rainfall over the weekend.

Diario Paredes, a teacher on an island in the flood area, talks about the losses due to the flooding.

(SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) TEACHER ON ISLANDS IN FLOOD AREA, DARIO PAREDES, SAYING:

"[talking about people who live on the islands] I'm less worried now [about the floods], but yes, the worry they have after seeing how they lose all their crops, which is their livelihood and a source of food throughout the year."

Cows wade through water searching for higher ground.

For now, residents continue to be evacuated from their homes and emergency crews are ready to assist.

But there is little sign conditions will dry up.
