Ghana: Dealing with the Mentally Ill | Global 3000

In many places in Africa, people with mental illnesses are excluded from society. Tens of thousands of people suffering from dementia, schizophrenia or depression are ostracized by their families. They're shut away and kept in chains under appalling conditions in camps that call themselves prayer centers. With funding from the European Commission and other institutions, the British organization Basic Needs is promoting community-based care and the reintegration of mental health patients into their families.
