Thousands of Syrians went to the polls on Tuesday in the country's first presidential elections with more than one candidate. Despite the apparent show of democracy, and two nominal opponents, Syria's current president, Bashar al-Assad, will remain in power. Experts have called these elections a "joke." There was no voting in the areas of the country controlled by the rebels. And one of Assad's two opponents has all but asked Syrians to vote for the current president.
