A call to end the monarchy in Barcelona

They are out on the streets of Barcelona calling for an end to the monarchy.

This comes hours after Spain's King Juan Carlos abdicated his throne to his son and heir, Prince Felipe.

(SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) UNIDENTIFIED BARCELONA OLDER MALE RESIDENT WITH CATALAN FLAG DRAPED OVER SHOULDERS SAYING:

"We're celebrating that the Republic is being revived. We want the Republic which was the government we had and they got rid of it. So let's see now if we can get it back."

The King has recently been seen as out of touch -- He took a secret luxury elephant-hunting trip to Botswana in 2012, a time when one in four Spanish workers was out of work.
