Cherchant à éviter un véhicule, Dwight (Mark Ruffalo), avocat, percute Josh, un jeune enfant, et prend la fuite. Ethan (Joaquin Phoenix) est détruit par la mort de son fils. Assoiffé de vengeance et déçu par la lenteur de la police, il décide de faire appel à un avocat pour traquer le coupable. C'est ainsi qu'il va retrouver Dwight, ignorant qu'il est responsable de la mort de son fils...
