In a surprise White House briefing room appearance, President Barack Obama announced on Friday (May 30) that Press Secretary Jay Carney will step down.

"I'm going to miss him a lot. I will continue to rely on him as a friend and advisor after he leaves to spend as much of the summer as he can with his kids before he decides what's next for him," said Obama.

The president wished Carney well and named his deputy, Josh Earnest, as the new Press Secretary.

Carney said he was looking at leaving his job officially in mid-June.
