Locals donate blood as shots fire in eastern Ukraine

This video released by the Ukrainian Border Guard Service shows the bullet holes following clashes along on the Russia-Ukraine border.

Ukrainian forces fired on pro-Russian rebels which tried to enter Ukraine from Russia overnight, according to the Guard Service.

They seized rifles and explosives.

Amid the clashes, people in the eastern city of Donetsk are donating blood to help victims on both sides of the conflict.

(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) TATYANA BARANOVSKAYA, HEAD OF DONETSK BLOOD DONATION CENTRE, SAYING:

"Usually about 70 people come here, today we have already more than 150 and donors keep coming, so I think we will have even more of them."

The mayor of Donetsk said the death toll in the clashes which erupted on Monday stood at 40, including two civilians.

But Pro-Russian rebels say more than 50 of their fighters have been killed.
