Ireland and Czech Republic go to the polls in EU elections

Voters in Ireland and the Czech Republic go to the polls on Friday in day two of the European Parliament elections.

Austerity and the economy have been top of the agenda in Ireland rather than European issues. A few independent candidates are running on an anti-EU platform.

Sinn Fein’s strong showing in opinion polls means the party could win three of the Irish Republic’s 11 seats.

On Thursday, voting took place in Britain and the Netherlands.

Geert Wilders far-right Freedom Party did less well than expected with a final exit poll showing the party had taken 12.2 percent of the Dutch vote, putting it in fourth place.

In Britain, final opinion polls showed the UK Independence Party topping the poll with the Conservatives in third place behind Labour.

The official results will be released on Sunday evening once other EU countries have elected their members.
