Narendra Modi arrives at his party headquarters in New Delhi to a hero's welcome.

The opposition BJP party swept to a landslide victory, giving India its first government with a parliamentary majority in a quarter of a century.

Around the country Modi's win is being greeted with optimism but an insistence that he must now delivery on his promises.

(SOUNDBITE)(Hindi) SHANKAR PRASAD, RESIDENT OF VARANASI, SAYING:

"The BJP party has won with an absolute majority (THIS MAN SAYS). Now they will rule and they should fulfil their promises to the people. If they don't deliver, then next time they'll suffer the same defeat as the others."

(SOUNDBITE) (Hindi) A RESIDENT OF MUMBAI, KAVITA DESHPANDE, SAYING:

"We are really happy that Modi won. We are sure that the change will come."
