At least 20 people were injured at a Pittsburgh-area high school when a 16-year-old sophomore went on a mass stabbing spree, according to reports.

The incident took place at Franklin Regional High School in Murrysville, Pennsylvania, 20 miles east of Pittsburgh.

At some time before 7:13am, the 10th grade student began stabbing people in classrooms and in the hallway on the first floor in the school's science wing. At least 20 people were injured, eight seriously.

The stabbing spree ended after assistant principal Sam King tackled the suspect to the ground.

At 7:13am, a school resource officer called emergency services to report stabbing victims. Some reports said security guards were alerted to the attack when the fire alarm went off. The suspect reportedly carried two knives.

The injured were taken to six area hospitals, with the oldest victim reported to be 60 years old. At least eight of the most seriously injured were flown to area hospitals by helicopter.
