The Ukrainian parliament held a minute’s silence on Wednesday in memory of seven soldiers killed in an attack by pro-Russian rebels in the east of the country.

The silence was supported by all of the political parties including the Party of Regions.

The assault on a military convoy happened near the city of Kramatorsk in the Donetsk region on Tuesday.

Seven soldiers died and eight others were seriously wounded. The Ukrainian defence ministry said one of the attackers was also killed and four wounded.

The defence ministry released footage of the aftermath of the assault which it said was carried out by around 30 attackers. In the video, injured Ukrainian soldiers are evacuated by helicopter while other soldiers can be seen patrolling the area of the ambush.

It’s the deadliest attack on the military since it began an operation against armed separatist groups last month.

The Donetsk region, along with Luhansk, declared independence from Kyiv on Monday.
