House explodes on live TV: police reveal timeline of events

Authorities have released a timeline of events leading up to the shooting and the eventual explosion that leveled a house in Brentwood, New Hampshire on Monday (May 12).
The bodies found in the wreckage of the house are believed to be the bodies of the gunman, Michael Nolan, and the officer he allegedly killed. Nolan's cause of death remains unclear. The cause of the explosion is also under investigation, but authorities say it is unlikely to be accidental.
Officer Steve Arkell arrived at the Brentwood, New Hampshire residence after a neighbor reported a verbal dispute between Nolan and his father, Walter.
Arkell arrived at the house at 4:01 p.m. and was met by Walter Nolan. After asking for permission to enter, the officer walked in and was struck down in a hail of shots.
Minutes later, Officer Derrek Franek was dispatched to the home where he encountered Walter Nolan in the frontyard. After questioning him and getting no answers, Franek handcuffed the old man.
Stepping into the house, Franek saw the wall spotted with bulletholes and Arkell lying on his back with a fatal gun wound. The officer was then attacked with gunfire and fled to through the backdoor, off the deck, and into the trees where he called for backup at 4:17 p.m.
Smoke was reported coming out of the back of the home followed by a fire at the front door. The fire eventually erupted in an explosion at 5:49 p.m., destroying the house.
Investigators including agents from New Hampshire State major crimes unit and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosive will continue to search for clues at the scene at least through Friday, if not longer.
