In celebration of Hello Kitty’s 40th anniversary, Furano Melon in Hokkaido, Japan has created a special fruit to satisfy diehard fans.

Believe it or not, the character so many people are fond of, Hello Kitty, recently turned 40. In celebration of her anniversary, Furano Melon in Hokkaido, Japan has created a special fruit to satisfy diehard fans.

Carved into the rind of the melon is the unmistakable outline of Hello Kitty’s face. In addition to the cool melon, which truth be told most fans wouldn’t dream of slicing into and eating, the package also comes with a special 40th anniversary white and red box.

Called the ‘Furano Hello Kitty 40th Anniversary’ melon, the fruits don’t come cheap, retailing for a little under 50 bucks. But customers know they're getting a special, limited edition item.

Only 400 of the four pound melons are available for purchase. The melons aren’t quite ready yet as they’re still growing, but the company is accepting orders until the end of July, provided that the 400 limit hasn’t been reached.

Last year, the same fruit grower also offered similar melons available through a Japanese gourmet food shop. The Hello Kitty cantaloupes showcased an imprint of the character on the exterior.

Those melons were selling for a little under $50 and also on a limited edition basis with only 300 melons available.
