Two subway trains collided at one of the busiest stations in South Korea capital Seoul Friday afternoon. 170 passengers were injured.

The accident happened at 2:32 p.m. local time at Sangwangsimni Station on Seoul's Line 2 subway. Both trains were heading east from Sangwangsimni Station to Jamsil station.

Reports say that one of the trains was stopped at the station due to mechanical problems, when the second train crashed onto it from behind. The impact derailed the last two cars of the train that was hit.

According to a passenger, an onboard announcement had told them to stay inside the trains, but many people forced the doors open to escape. Korean authorities said many injuries were caused by passengers jumping from the trains onto the tracks.

The two trains together were carrying 600 passengers. Many of them were evacuated by walking from the tracks to the platform through the train tunnel.

Seoul Metro have temporarily suspended train services between Euljiro 1-ga station and Seongsu station on Line 2.

No fatalities have so far been reported.

The accident comes less than two weeks after South Korean ferry Sewol capsized and sank en route to Jeju from Incheon. More than 300 of the 450 people onboard died or are missing and presumed dead.
