Eleven Chinese crew members are missing after their cargo ship collided on Monday with a container vessel and sank in waters just off Hong Kong, the South China Morning Post reported.

The accident between a Chinese cargo ship and a container vessel happened at about 2:30 a.m. just outside Hong Kong maritime territory, nearly five kilometres south of the island of Po Toi. The Chinese cargo ship started sinking soon after the collision.
Eleven of its crew members are missing.

One of the crew, a 47-year-old man, was picked up by a fishing boat and taken to Hong Kong. He is now being treated at Ruttonjee Hospital in Hong Kong's Wan Chai district.

The air and sea search and rescue operation, coordinated by the Guangdong Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, is still underway.

According to the South China Morning Post, five Marine Police launches, three fireboats, two diving vessels and a Government Flying Service helicopter are also involved in the search.

In October 2012 another collision between a high-speed ferry and a pleasure boat killed 39 people in what has been considered Hong Kong's worst maritime disaster in more than 40 years, AFP reported.
