Fort Hood shooting: US Army releases detailed account of deadly rampage

Six days after soldier Ivan Lopez opened fire in the Fort Hood military base in Texas killing 3 people and injuring 16 others, the US Army released more details about the dynamics of the attack.

According to New York Daily News, the shooting happened in three different buildings, in an area the equivalent of two city blocks.

Specialist Ivan Lopez began his attack at the administrative office of his unit after a dispute about a request for leave which ended with him killing one soldier and wounding 10 others, the New York Times reported.

Lopez then exited the building, got into his vehicle and opened fire from the car while driving on the wrong lane of the road, injuring one soldier. Once at the motor pool area, he shot dead another soldier inside an office and injured two more who were standing outside the building.

With 17 people already dead or injured, Lopez drove toward the medical brigade building. Along the way, he fired through the windshield of an oncoming car, wounding the passenger.

At the medical building he parked the car, shot a soldier in the parking lot and once inside he killed the soldier sitting at the reception and injured another, USA Today reported.

Lopez's last stop was in a parking lot a block away, where he was confronted and fired upon by a female military police officer. The bullet did not strike Specialist Lopez, who then turned his gun on himself.

The entire deadly spree lasted approximately eight minutes.

Five of the injured are still hospitalized, while the rest have already returned to duty.

US military spokesman Lt Gen Mark Milley said that the suspect had served in Iraq and was suffering from anxiety and depression. He was being assessed to see if he had post-traumatic stress disorder, BBC reported.

This is the second shooting accident at Fort Hood in the last few years. On Nov. 5, 2009, Army psychiatrist Nidal Malik Hasan opened fire at the military base, killed 12 soldiers and one civilian, and injured 29 others before police managed to stop him by shooting at him.
He is now on the military's death row.
