Mangled metal. Muddied corpses. And flipped over carriage cars.

Officials in Democratic Republic of Congo are investigating a deadly train derailment.

Tuesday's crash left over 60 dead and 80 seriously injured.

The cause remains unknown.

(SOUNDBITE) (French) DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO MINISTER OF HEALTH, FELIX KABANGE, SAYING:

"At this point, we are looking at this as an accident. We are not in a position to say the real cause. There are three aspects that we have to consider in this type of accident: there's the train itself, the state of the railway and then finally, the train conductor or other personnel."

Congo's infrastructure is in tatters after decades of neglect and conflict.

People struggle to travel around the vast nation, which is roughly the size of Western Europe.
