SOMALIS IN KENYA PROTEST ANTI-TERROR OPERATION
Hundreds of Somalis have been arrested in Kenya… web users have been sharing accounts and photos on social networks, and since the beginning of April, scenes like this have become common place in Eastleigh, a neighbourhood of the capital Nairobi. The arrests are part of the anti-terrorist operation “Usalama watch” launched in response to a wave of attacks across Kenya over the past month.
This report, available on YouTube, says those arrested are more often than not taken to Kasarani stadium in Nairobi which has been turned into a police station where hundreds of detainees are held. The activist who made the film, without permission, reminds viewers that the aim of the security sweep is to identify potential terrorists from Somalia`s armed Islamist movement, Al-Shabab.
But web users are concerned by the interrogation methods used and have taken to Twitter to voice their opposition to these mass arrests under the #KasaraniConcentrationCamp or #JusticeForEastleigh Twitter hashtags. They urge the Kenyan government to end the ethnic profiling and harassment of Somalis living in Kenya, and women and children in particular.
Somali Kenyans who have directly or indirectly suffered from the Kenyan government`s repression are also speaking out, through a Tumblr blog. With the "Kenya I’m not a terrorist" online campaign, citizens say they too want Kenya to be safe, and they should not be seen as terrorists simply because of their ethnic origi...
