New Jersey forest fire threatens homes, forces school evacuation

Firefighters battled a forest blaze in Ocean County, New Jersey on Thursday (April 24) that threatens homes and forced the evacuation of a school.

The fire, which started on Wednesday, is said to be have spread to 300 acres, its flames reportedly lapping near at least 40 homes.

Students at Toms River Intermediate South school were evacuated, according to a posting on the school district's website.

The Department of Environmental Protection estimates that some 500 acres will have been destroyed by the time the blaze is put out.

No injuries from the blaze were reported.
